Profile for Chih-ming "Jimmy" Yu
Dr. Chih-ming "Jimmy" Yu
DVM, MPH, ECFVG
Dr. Yu graduated from the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan and obtained his veterinary license in Taiwan in 1993. He is a life member of the Chinese Society of Veterinary Sciences. After moving to the United States, he earned a master's degree in Public Health & Tropical Medicine (MPHTM) from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and completed the ARP & ECFVG program at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. Dr. Yu worked at the Greenbrier Animal Hospital in Evansville, IN, for five years, where he began using a surgical laser for various procedures. In 2010, his family established the U-Vet Animal Clinic, which continues to provide laser surgery for the tri-state area.

Dr. Yu has been a nationally accredited veterinarian (NVAP) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture since 2005. He has been a regular speaker for Tristate Professionals on Local Lifestyles with TV host Angie Humphrey of ABC 25 since 2019. He is an active member of several local and national veterinary associations, including AVMA, INVMA, SWINVMA, AAHA, ALSC, VIN, and VMG. He has served as a board member of the Veterinary Technology Advisory Board at Owensboro Community & Technical College (OCTC) since 2021 and as a clinical mentor supervisor for five senior veterinary and veterinary technology students from Purdue University, the University of Minnesota, and OCTC. He was a presenter at the 2020 and 2021 symposia of the American Laser Study Club. He contributed content to the 2023 American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Guidelines for the Management of Allergic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats. His special interests include ultrasonography, international health certificate assistance before pet traveling, treating patients with parvovirus, heartworm disease, seizures, skin/ear diseases, Diabetes ketonacidosis, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, GI tract anastomosis surgery, Anal glands removal surgery, toe/foot/tail surgery, and soft-tissue surgery for Diabetic/Gereatric patients, as well as tumors, using CO2 laser biopsy and ablation. Dr. Yu’s dream before retirement is to provide a local place for advanced pet care, so that pet parents wouldn't have to travel far to seek pet care.

In 2005, Dr. Yu, his wife, Fu-Mei Kao, and their daughter, An-Ping, moved to Evansville. Their property is shared with two dogs, three rescued cats, thirty-three hens, and honey bees. In 2019, both Dr. Yu & Fu-Mei were named Pacesetters who led a new Purdue veterinary teaching hospital campaign in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Dr. Katherine Turpen
DVM, CVA, LSHC-S, Elite FFCP (Veterinary), FFCP (Veterinary - Avian)
Dr. Turpen completed her DVM in 2016 at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her passions include avian medicine, behavior medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and integrative medicine . After graduation she pursued further education in avian and exotic pet medicine by completing a Zoological Companion Animal Internship at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. She has presented research at the Association of Avian Veterinarians Conference and been published in the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.

She also pursued continuing education in behavior medicine and obtained her Low Stress Handling Silver Certification and Fear Free Elite Certification. She greatly values the human-animal bond and maintaining it. She focuses on providing pets with the veterinary care they need while decreasing their fear and anxiety.

Dr. Turpen completed training and certification at the Chi University in Veterinary Acupuncture to become a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. She completed her internship hours towards this certification with Dr. Bradley-Bays, an Exotic Companion Mammal Board Certified Veterinarian, Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, Certified Veterinary Medical Manipulation Practitioner, and Certified TCVM Palliative and End-of-Life Practitioner, in order to gain experience applying Chinese Medicine in exotic companion animal species. She strives to combine both eastern and western medicine to give the best care possible. She has also completed training in kinesthesiology taping as an alternative pain therapy.

Dr. Turpen’s personal interests include knitting, animal training, reading, and dancing. She is currently the fur-mother of two Australian Shepherds, one husky, and five cats. She has previously also had green cheek conures and guinea pigs.

Shannon earned her bachelor’s degree in Health Administration in 2019 from the University of Southern Indiana. She has been a member of the U Vet team since February of 2017. She started as a front desk receptionist, then became the office manager three months later. She received her Fear Free Certification in March of 2018.
She has one dog and four cats. In her downtime, she enjoys hiking, reading books, spending time with her family & friends, or hanging out with her pets. She’s an avid animal lover and enjoys learning new things, especially in the veterinary field! She looks forward to assisting you and your furry friends in any way that she can!

CJ
CJ started as a Veterinary Assistant at U-Vet in June of 2021 and became Fear Free Certified in August 2021. In August 2022, with Dr Jimmy Yu and Fu-Mei Kao’s generous help, CJ fulfilled a lifelong dream of furthering his education by enrolling in Purdue's Veterinary Nursing Distance Learning program. He hopes to graduate as a Certified Veterinary Nurse in August of 2025. CJ looks forward to growing his Veterinary skills so he can continue to better serve our clients and help their pets have the best possible experience and outcome at U-Vet Animal Clinic.
CJ enjoys traveling, hiking, camping, cooking, volunteering with local Rescues, and spending time with his family and two fur babies, Tessa and Bongo. He is thrilled to have a position here at U-Vet where he can spend his days combining his love of animals and learning new and exciting things.

Kai
Kai started at U-Vet in 2024 as a Veterinary Receptionist. Animals have always held a special place in their heart, from the smallest of bugs to our biggest beloved furry friends. They are passionate about pursuing a career as a Veterinary Technologist. They currently share their life with their longtime partner, two wonderful special needs pups (Nosey and Beano), seven sassy cats, and their friendly Pumpkin Patch Tarantula, Oogie Boogie.
In their downtime, Kai can often be found reading a good book, cooking new and exciting recipes, and exploring the outdoors. They also enjoy displaying insects and love meeting new faces while helping to educate people about our tiny insect friends.
